Green Tea Weight Loss
Obesity is a national epidemic here in the United States and many countries around the world. According to the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia, obesity is a leading cause of death by such diseases as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. 1 of 3 adults in the country are considered obese, as well as 1 in 6 children. Obesity is also a huge financial drain on our economy. These are all facts as reported by the CDC in the United States
There are many factors which can contribute to obesity. Caloric intake, your environment, genetics, certain diseases and drugs also can come into play but for the majority of people who are considered over weight, in order to control one’s weight, one needs to control your caloric intake. Calories are just a unit of measure of energy supplied by the food you eat. To maintain a certain body weight you need to balance the calories you take in, with the calories you consume or burn. Diet and exercise are the main factors here to consider.
The benefits of green tea are well documented Numerous research studies have shown that consumption of green tea can help with weight loss and abdominal fat loss especially when included with exercise. Some clinical research show that green tea extract may help increase metabolism and in turn burn fat, especially belly fat. People who are moderately obese are able to lose belly fat and weight by the consumption of green tea along with caffeine. Evidence suggests that substances in green tea known as catechins are responsible for the herb’s fat-burning effect. Catechins are a type of powerful antioxidant found not only in green tea, but also in other foods and herbs.
In green tea caffeine COMBINED with theanine strengthen the effects of an antioxident called polyhenol on weight control and fat buildup in laboratory mice. The combined effect of caffeine with catechins in green tea contribute to it’s thermogenic properties. This suggests the increase in metabolism by green tea consumption is accomplished by more that caffeine alone.
From the United States Department of Agriculture Research:
“…decreases were achieved in abdominal and subcutaneous abdominal fat areas and in serum triglycerides in the catechin group compared to the control group. Therefore, consumption of green tea catechins may enhance exercise-induced changes in abdominal fat and serum triglycerides. “

From The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition:
-Efficacy of a green tea extract rich in catechin polyphenols and
caffeine in increasing 24-h energy expenditure and fat
oxidation in humans
“Green tea has thermogenic properties and promotes fat oxidation beyond that explained by its caffeine content per se. The green tea extract may play a role in the control of body composition via sympathetic activation of thermogenesis, fat oxidation, or both.”
One study shows that even very short term green tea consumption can have a definite effect on weight loss and burning fat. After just a 14 day period body weight was reduced by 0.96 kg and body fat by 2.36%. This same study also showed a significant reduction in cholesterol and an overall decrease in blood pressure. One can only assume the health benefits to be achieved by a healthy diet that includes the regular intake of green tea and exercise.

*NOTES:There have been reports in the news as of late concerning some dietary supplements causing serious health issues with some people, in particular liver damage. This has been reported with concentrated green tea extract but I am not aware of this occurring in healthy people who drink green tea in normal amounts.
Anything in concentrated amounts can be harmful and this includes CONCENTRATED green tea extract supplements. The products I promote are for brewing green tea in normal concentrations and are beneficial to ones health in many ways including burning fat and weight loss.
